When I first learnt that I had to choose to take up a compulsory course in university for my second semester, I looked at all the options and my comfort zone was public speaking and it was available but I decided to challenge myself and so I opted to take up something completely new to me which was coding. I was actually afraid to be honest because I knew nothing about it but I thank my lucky stars that my lecturer was very accommodating and she did teach us scratch from scratch.
I am not a very computer savvy person but I know that it is a skill that I must learn and fast because no matter we like it or not, computers are the future and the future is already here. When my classes started, everything was completely new to me and it did take up more time that I expected because I needed to learn up the functions and how to code them weekly to submit my weekly assignments, my lecturer Miss Seleviawati did teach us and guide us weekly on how to code every step but because I was slightly slow, I needed to relearn them myself so I could complete my assignment.
I was also chosen as the head of our ‘Projek Khas’ and it did teach me and build my character as I had to manage the whole team and present our whole project to the university along with my vice chairperson Stan. We had to build a couple of games on Scratch for school students to play, sort of educational games. My group and I built 2 different games and I contributed my efforts towards building the math game. There were many bugs while building the game but I ma grateful that I had very supportive groupmates who were willing to teach me and guide me and I sincerely appreciate their patience with me throughout the whole course. Without these group mates, I would have struggled to cope and I do not think I would have learnt that much. At the end all groups built their games and our lecturer handed those games to the school for the kids to play with them as we could not carry out our event due to restrictions by the Education Ministry. We were actually all ready for our ‘Project Khas’ as everyone in the team carried out their respective responsibilities and we even had a test run for the whole thing but more importantly above that, despite the circumstance, our efforts to build the games were not wasted and the kids still got to play the games that we built.
I am really grateful in the end that I choose to take up this challenge to learn some basics of coding and today from knowing nothing about coding at least I have some idea and I know that coding is all about practice. I wish to continue to practice so I can improve myself so I can continue to code. I think this kind of MPU subject is a really great initiative in universities because it gives students like me a chance to take up a new skill.
